Integrating Facebook: Apps, Scripts and Services

July 4th, 2008

Since I’ve found myself wasting entirely too much time…at work..at school..and well just about everywhere else on Facebook, I thought I’d compile a list of tools and gimmicks that can help you enjoy and perhaps abuse everyone’s favorite social networking site(not Myspace). Now by no means am I trying to dwarf Mashable’s 150+ List, but rather mention those that I actually use as opposed to just listing ones that exist.

Status Update w/ Mood Blast

I’ve been a big fan for sometime of the guys at Circle Six Design, and if you’re unfamiliar I’d like to introduce you to Mood Blast. Sexy name, no?

I’m going to sum it up real quick. If it has a status it can be updated. Twitter, Pownce, Jaiku, Skype, Tumblr, Adium, IChat, and Facebook can all be updated from this light weight app.

Facebook and Address Book Sync

Having made so many virtual friends it can be hard to keep up with their personal info. FacebookSync fairly seamlessly keeps your Mac’s Addressbook up to date. You do need to have their names actually in your Addressbook to work though. You just can’t take everyone’s personal info. I would approach this delicately. Social networking exists so that you can keep in touch with people you don’t really want to hang out with. If you’ve got 700 virtual friends, you may not want to sift through them all when you’re digging for a number.

Photo Uploader

Because we like to make things brainlessly easy you can now upload your photos from iPhoto with a plugin and avoid that cumbersome web app upploader.

Facebook Chat

Just to get this clear. I hate Web Apps. The reload, refresh and response times are all generally too slow to get any real work done. And as I loath the popularity of Google Talk, I fear the day Facebook Chat becomes discovered by the world. I’ll admit that I like how streamlined it is, sitting nicely at the bottom of my screen, but it’s not enough.

The premier IM client for the Mac has just added Facebook Chat to it’s long list of compatible chat services and it’s pretty phat. Not gonna lie.

Now essentially you can use Facebook Chat with all the functionality of Adium without the lag and need to be sitting on Facebook with your browser open.

And since you can be logged into multiple IM accounts at one time you won’t lose any functionality out of your AIM or Yahoo accounts.

Download Adium 1.3b6. I know it’s in Beta but it runs super clean.

Be a Facebook Stalker

Get ready to be creeped out. Facebook allows you to subscribe to your different Facebook feeds (How to). Now if living in your mother’s basement and off of hot pockets wasn’t enough to make you enticing to the world, now you can be a real winner. Now that you have an RSS feed you could perhaps…
