The gift of Netflix keeps on giving.

My mother spends roughly 60 bucks a month on cable for her weekly tryst with ‘Dancing with the Stars‘ and so she can watch a movie every so often.

In my mind that doesn’t equate to me the 60 dollars, especially in such a penny pinching time.

Solution:

I’ve been wanting to tout how freakin’ awesome my Roku Netflix Playerexperience has been and how valuable the service can be for the penniless movie buff.

The Roku, for 100 dollars, lets you stream Netflix Instant Watch films and Amazon movies you can psuedo ‘rent’ for a fee to your television in HD. By the end of the year, Roku intends to bring 10 different channels, including the current Netflix and Amazon to their tiny set top device. I’m crossing my fingers for Pandora.

Regarding the Netflix Instant Watch, those brilliant fellows at Netflix allow you to activate more than one device under a base account. So for 8.99 my mother in ye old Virginia can stream her movies and tv shows off her Roku, while I stream in ye old Syracuse on my Xbox and still get my one DVD in the mail.

Note: The Xbox Live/Netflix experience has been buggy. Although it has been with long terms of perfect reception with an occasional reset of the account. One every two months.

Support Apps and Sites:

Instantwatcher – The Netflix Instant Watch search and discover functionality in their site is aweful. You can spend hours sifting through crap, all those B-movies no one watches, and get no where near a watchable film. Instantwatcher has a great interface for movie lovers to just find what they want whether its new, popular or sci-fi, and then add straight to your queue.

For the Media Center folk, I’ve recently started dabbling with Boxee and am for the most part impressed. The sheer amount of content you can stream in amazing. They really have created a great product. Although, in my experience, I’ve had a great deal of trouble syncing the resolutions just right from my laptop to the TV. I will admit I haven’t read the manual yet, but I feel like it should be easier than that.

If you’re interested in finding other apps that can make your Netflix experience more excited check the Netflix App Gallery.
